Welcome to the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing at the University of California, Irvine.  As I approach my first year as the Founding Dean, I am honored to have been part of an extraordinary sequence of events that will impact the future of UCI and the School of Nursing.

In January 2017, our 10-year old nursing program achieved School status. A remarkable $40 Million Dollar gift from the William & Sue Gross Family Foundation will enable us to support the vision we have long desired; that being to dramatically reinvigorate the School of Nursing into a vibrant hub where outstanding faculty and students lead in transforming the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities. We will soon begin planning for the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing building, a brand new state-of-the-art facility which will allow us to increase classroom and research space, and support cutting-edge education, research, and practice.

As part of a broader health sciences network at UCI, we are fortunate to collaborate with faculty in the School of Medicine, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Program in Public Health. On September 18, 2017, a transformative gift of $200 Million was announced by Susan and Henry Samueli, which will restructure the way science-based approaches to whole person health is conceptualized and taught to future generations of students trained as nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and public health professionals. As part of this amazing gift, the College of Health Sciences will be named the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, where a focus on the innovative spirit of integrative health will be fostered, and the best of prevention science will be fostered among our four health professional disciplines and across the campus. As Susan Samueli has always envisioned, this gift will empower us collectively to nourish and support the innate healing capacity and well-being of individuals, families, and communities into an integrative body-mind-spirit perspective.

As Founding Dean, I invite you to explore our website to better understand the wide-range of programs we offer and to follow us as the impact of these spectacular events unfold. This is indeed an exciting time for us as we ramp up recruitment of stellar faculty with well-established areas of research which focus on Integrative and Population Health, Psychiatric/Mental Health, Data Sciences, and Neurobehavioral Sciences. Both the baccalaureate and master’s degrees are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Our new Masters Entry program was initiated in June 2017, our PhD program has gone hybrid, and we are hopeful for a Doctor of Nursing Practice program to begin in 2018, focused on our innovative and exciting new initiatives.

The Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing is distinguished by its community-based approach to promoting, improving and sustaining health and wellness throughout the community. Whether you are interested in becoming an RN or interested in pursuing a graduate degree, our School will provide you with the opportunity to serve as strong ambassadors for the delivery of compassionate care, cutting edge research, or healthcare policy development, enriching the health of societies around the world one patient at a time.

Cordially Yours,

Adey Nyamathi, PhD, ANP, FAAN
